DONG NAI: FROM THE “SWINE FARMING HUB” TO MODERN LIVESTOCK ORIENTATION

As Vietnam’s leading livestock hub, Dong Nai currently maintains a swine herd of approximately 1.9 to 2.1 million heads, accounting for a significant share of the national structure. However, the total herd has seen a slight decline in recent years due to disease outbreaks and new regulations requiring small-scale farms to relocate away from residential areas. Despite this, pork output remains stable thanks to the growth in scale and productivity of industrial farms.

Live hog prices in the province have consistently stayed high, ranging from VND 70,000–75,000 per kilogram, creating favorable conditions for farmers to earn profits after a long period of low prices. Nevertheless, the industry continues to face risks from African Swine Fever (ASF), prompting authorities to tighten disease control, transportation, and slaughter regulations.

Dong Nai is now accelerating the restructuring of its livestock sector toward modernization and sustainability, encouraging the development of large-scale farms, applying automation technologies, and promoting organic farming. These transformations are creating a positive outlook for the swine industry while also raising the bar for biosecurity, disease management, and value chain development.

In response to the inevitable transformation of the livestock sector, Vietstock, in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Association of Vietnam (AHAV), is organising a specialised swine farming roadshow in Dong Nai under the theme:

“Biosecurity in Livestock Production – Solutions for Sustainable Swine Farming”

The roadshow brings together leading experts from AHAV, Nong Lam University, the Institute of Animal Sciences for Southern Vietnam (IASVN) and National Institute of Animal Sciences (NIAS). It aims to share technical knowledge, hands-on experience, and practical solutions for disease control and improving farming efficiency.

The event also offers fresh perspectives on sustainable development in the swine industry, from implementing biosecurity measures to leveraging indigenous breeds within a circular agriculture model, aligned with the sector’s ongoing transformation.
