The Unstoppable Spread of the ASF virus. Already in the five continents – by Prof. José Sánchez-Vizcaino DVM, Ph.D, DhC – Full Professor of Animal Health at the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM) and Director of the OIE-ASF Reference Laboratory

Abstract: African Swine Fever (ASF) is at present the main threat for the global swine industry. It is affecting more than 50 countries on 5 continents, presenting several different epidemiological scenarios.

In this presentation, we provide a summary of the current situation across continents and will identify the main gaps that allowed the virus to spread. We will review the best tools to stop the spread and protect farms including the importance of biosecurity, a good surveillance program, a specific contingency program and a rapid response for the control of the disease. The importance of Public and Private collaboration will be also highlighted.

Finally, the ASF vaccine status will be also reviewed together with the scientific advances in vaccine research and the results of different animal trials obtained in domestic pigs and wild boars as well as pilot vaccination programs for the future.

Plasma Biosafety & Efficient Pig Production – by Dr. Javier Polo – Senior Vice-President Research and Development at APC
