The condition is particularly dangerous in newborn piglets because they are wet at birth, have limited insulation, low energy reserves, and <\/span><b>immature thermoregulatory capacity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The greatest risk occurs immediately after birth and during the first few hours of life. Low-birth-weight piglets, piglets that are slow to reach the udder, or those that do not receive enough colostrum are at greater risk because hypothermia and energy deficiency can create a vicious cycle: the colder the piglet becomes, the weaker it becomes and the less effectively it suckles, while reduced milk intake further limits its ability to produce heat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective management therefore involves more than simply \u201cturning on a heat lamp.\u201d It requires a combination of <\/span><b>drying the piglet, providing an appropriate microclimate, assessing its reflexes, supporting timely colostrum intake, and identifying animals that require professional intervention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>When a piglet is cold: what should be prioritised?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Move the piglet away from the cold area and dry it<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Newborn piglets lose heat rapidly when they remain wet, lie on a cold surface, or are exposed to direct draughts. Drying the piglet and moving it to a warm area should be among the first priorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Assess whether the piglet is alert and able to swallow<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Observe its ability to stand, search for the udder, suckle, swallow, and breathe normally. Rectal temperature provides a more objective assessment than relying only on how cold the ears or skin feel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Support suckling only when the piglet is sufficiently alert<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Once the piglet is warmer, has a swallowing reflex, and is breathing relatively normally, it should be helped to access colostrum. Why are newborn piglets particularly vulnerable to cold?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Rapid heat loss after birth<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immediately after birth, fluid on the piglet\u2019s skin evaporates and removes heat from the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat loss may increase further if the piglet lies on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold flooring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wet flooring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concrete surfaces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Areas exposed to direct draughts.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Limited ability to generate heat<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newborn piglets have limited energy reserves and thermoregulatory capacity compared with older pigs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They therefore depend heavily on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental temperature.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplemental heat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lying-surface conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colostrum intake.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Low-birth-weight piglets are at greater risk<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small piglets commonly:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have lower energy reserves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lose heat more quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compete less successfully for teats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are more easily displaced from the udder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Become weak more quickly after chilling.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These piglets should be identified and monitored closely from soon after birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Piglets born later in the litter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piglets born toward the end of farrowing may:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive assistance later.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reach colostrum later.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a greater risk of weakness if farrowing is prolonged.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring the farrowing process can therefore play an important role in preventing hypothermia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Colostrum and the hypothermia\u2013energy deficit cycle<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colostrum has two particularly important functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, it provides <\/span><b>passive immunity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, it provides <\/span><b>energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that helps the piglet maintain heat production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a piglet becomes cold:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activity decreases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Udder-seeking behaviour weakens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suckling ability declines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy intake falls.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat production declines further.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This creates a cycle:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hypothermia \u2192 weakness \u2192 poor suckling \u2192 energy deficit \u2192 further cooling.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newborn care should therefore combine:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drying.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warming.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assistance in reaching the udder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring actual suckling.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental temperature alone should not be the focus if the piglet is not actually receiving colostrum.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Able to suckle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the condition may not yet be severe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>As hypothermia progresses<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak suckling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty maintaining attachment to a teat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending long periods lying down.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Failure to seek the heat source.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loses the suckling reflex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loses the swallowing reflex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathes very weakly or abnormally.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has periods of apnoea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responds abnormally or minimally to stimulation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures are also an emergency sign but are not specific to hypothermia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may be associated with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoglycaemia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoxia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurological disorders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other serious conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These piglets require early professional assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Common causes and risk factors<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Cold weather<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk increases during:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe cold spells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold rain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong winds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid drops in temperature.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Vietnam, the risk is generally more apparent during cold periods in northern and central regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, hypothermia can still occur in warmer climates when:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newborn piglets remain wet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The farrowing area is draughty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rainy conditions persist.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flooring is cold or damp.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The heating system
