Bacteria may reach a joint through the bloodstream, from a navel infection, systemic infection, or <\/span><b>another focus of infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If treatment is delayed, joint damage may have long-term effects on mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article focuses on how to approach lameness in cattle, when septic arthritis should be suspected, and when veterinary assessment is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lameness in cattle: a 3-step check<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Step 1 \u2013 Identify the site of pain<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Examine the hoof, interdigital space, foot, tendon and ligament regions, and joints. Lameness does not automatically mean arthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 2 \u2013 Look for warning signs<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A swollen, hot, painful joint; inability or unwillingness to bear weight; a penetrating wound near a joint; reduced suckling in calves; or involvement of multiple joints are signs that warrant early assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 3 \u2013 Decide whether short-term observation is appropriate or veterinary assessment is needed<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A mild injury with a clear cause, no joint heat or swelling, and an animal that can still stand and walk may be monitored briefly. In contrast, suspected septic arthritis, inability to stand, or systemic illness should not be left untreated simply to complete a fixed 24\u201348-hour observation period.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Quick assessment: is the pain coming from the hoof, soft tissue, or joint?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Signs suggesting joint involvement<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a joint is:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly swollen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warmer than the corresponding joint on the opposite limb.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Painful on palpation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restricted in movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associated with reluctance to bear weight.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then disease or injury within or around the joint should be assessed carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparing both limbs can help identify asymmetry.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Signs suggesting foot or hoof disease<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foot disorders may cause severe pain even when the lesion is located below the joint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Areas to examine include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interdigital space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sole.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoof wall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Areas of ulceration or cracking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign material.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal odour or discharge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following table is intended only as a aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tendons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ligaments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft tissues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joints.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible causes include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slipping.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impact injuries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trauma from another animal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transport-related injuries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If swelling develops after trauma, it should not automatically be labelled \u201carthritis\u201d unless the lesion has actually been localised to the joint.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>When other infectious diseases should be considered<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If several cattle simultaneously develop:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lameness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vesicular or ulcerative lesions around the feet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral lesions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive salivation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appropriate isolation measures should be taken and a veterinarian or the relevant animal-health authority should be contacted promptly rather than managing the problem as routine arthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distended with fluid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restricted in movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The animal may:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refuse to rise.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Systemic signs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where infection has broader effects, signs may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: arthritis can damage:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articular cartilage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint capsule.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Periarticular tissues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight-bearing structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once substantial joint damage has developed, the likelihood of full functional recovery may decrease considerably.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. Swollen joints in calves require earlier attention<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Septic arthritis is an important cause of swelling in one or more joints in calves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Navel infection<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After birth, bacteria may enter through the navel and spread through the bloodstream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there, infection may reach:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight:
