In practice, individual products may differ in their authorised animal species, indications, routes of administration, absorption characteristics, duration of action, and withdrawal times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For orally administered products, effectiveness may also be affected by the mineral content of feed or drinking water. Ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron can form complexes with tetracyclines and reduce the amount of drug absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, the use of oxytetracycline should not begin with only the question, \u201cWhat diseases does this medicine treat?\u201d Several factors should be considered together:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the pathogen is likely to be susceptible to tetracyclines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the product is authorised for the relevant animal species and condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the dosage form and route of administration are appropriate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the animals are actually receiving the intended amount of medicine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the withdrawal period should be managed after treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inappropriate use may reduce treatment effectiveness, increase selection pressure for antimicrobial resistance, and raise the risk of antibiotic residues in livestock products.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Before using oxytetracycline: 4 key issues to distinguish<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than memorising a list of diseases or animal species, oxytetracycline can be approached through four key considerations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The right pathogen<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytetracycline has a relatively broad spectrum of activity, but \u201cbroad-spectrum\u201d does not mean it can treat every infectious disease. Effectiveness depends on whether the causative bacteria remain susceptible to tetracyclines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The right formulation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral, injectable, long-acting, and topical formulations are used differently. They should not be substituted for one another simply because they contain the same active ingredient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The right conditions of use<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With oral administration, water or feed intake and the presence of certain minerals may affect the amount of medicine actually absorbed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The right post-treatment management<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal time is specific to the individual product. There is no single withdrawal period that applies to all oxytetracycline products.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. One active ingredient does not mean all oxytetracycline products are the same<\/b><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 955px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" thereby interfering with the protein synthesis required for bacterial growth and replication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytetracycline is primarily considered a <\/span><b>bacteriostatic antibiotic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its spectrum of activity may include certain:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gram-positive bacteria.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gram-negative bacteria.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mycoplasma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlamydia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rickettsia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the theoretical spectrum of activity does not mean that every strain within these groups remains susceptible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susceptibility may vary according to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial strain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geographical area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individual farm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of antimicrobial use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selection pressure within the herd or flock.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When disease recurs, treatment fails, or a herd or flock has a history of repeated tetracycline use, sample collection, bacterial culture, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, where feasible, may help veterinarians make a more evidence-based treatment decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Products labelled \u201coxytetracycline\u201d may still be very different<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An oxytetracycline product is not defined only by the name of its active ingredient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other factors should also be considered:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strength or concentration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosage form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excipients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Target species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Route of administration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequency of administration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment duration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection-site requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a long-acting injectable oxytetracycline product should not be considered equivalent to a water-soluble product simply because both contain the same active ingredient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, the duration of action of one long-acting formulation cannot be assumed to apply to every product labelled \u201clong-acting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. When may oxytetracycline actually be appropriate?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytetracycline should not be selected solely on the basis of a disease name or a single clinical sign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its use should be based on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An appropriate diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The likelihood that the causative organism remains susceptible to tetracyclines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approved product indications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Route of administration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinary assessment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clinical situations below represent areas in which certain products may have approved indications. They do not mean that every oxytetracycline product is authorised for all of these conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Respiratory diseases<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some oxytetracycline products may be authorised for respiratory infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain infections associated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasteurella multocida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain cases associated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mannheimia haemolytica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in cattle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mycoplasma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infections in poultry or other species where consistent with the product indication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain bacterial respiratory diseases in pigs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b><i>Mycoplasma gallisepticum<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in poultry, tetracyclines may help reduce clinical signs in some cases, but they may not completely eliminate infection or the carrier state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, antibiotics do not replace:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biosecurity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breeding flock control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disease surveillance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Gastrointestinal diseases<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhoea in piglets, calves, or buffalo calves is not automatically an indication for oxytetracycline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhoea may be associated with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacteria.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viruses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutrition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feed management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Housing conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytetracycline should only be considered when there is a reasonable basis to suspect a bacterial infection caused by a susceptible organism and when the product has an appropriate indication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics should not be selected solely on the basis of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faecal colour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Number of days of diarrhoea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced feed intake.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Reproductive infections<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some products may have indications for reproductive infections caused by susceptible bacteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain postpartum uterine infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain reproductive infections in sows.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain diseases associated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlamydia abortus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in sheep or goats.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, not every case of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metritis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endometritis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal vaginal discharge.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delayed postpartum recovery.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requires oxytetracycline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug selection should take into account:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time since parturition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General condition of the animal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suspected pathogen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severity of disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Skin, soft tissue, and certain foot infections<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some products may be used for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infected wounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain skin infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft-tissue infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain cases of foot rot in cattle when consistent with the approved indication.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infectious foot diseases should be clearly distinguished from non-infectious conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A broad term such as <\/span><b>\u201choof inflammation\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should not be used as the sole basis for antibiotic treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conditions such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laminitis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sole ulcers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White line disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should not automatically be assumed to be bacterial infections requiring oxytetracycline.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Which animal species can oxytetracycline be used in?<\/b><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 758px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" every species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Vietnam, the <\/span><b>authorisation status of veterinary medicines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be checked against current regulatory documents and databases, including <\/span><b>Circular No. 18\/2024\/TT-BNNPTNT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and relevant updates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Pigs<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some products for pigs may be indicated for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respiratory infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain reproductive infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain secondary bacterial infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytetracycline should not be used simply because pigs are coughing or have diarrhoea without first assessing the likely cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Poultry<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In chickens, ducks, or Muscovy ducks, some products may be authorised for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain respiratory infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain conditions associated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mycoplasma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The production category should be checked carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A product authorised for broilers should not automatically be assumed suitable for poultry producing eggs for human consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the label states:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not use in birds producing eggs for human consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a withdrawal period for eggs should not be independently assumed in order to use the product outside its authorised conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Cattle<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some products may be authorised for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respiratory infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"
