In livestock production, florfenicol is commonly discussed in relation to certain bacterial infections, particularly respiratory diseases in pigs, poultry, or cattle when the specific product is appropriately indicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the fact that an antimicrobial has activity against a broad range of bacteria does not mean that it is appropriate for every herd or flock showing coughing, fever, or reduced feed intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before florfenicol is used, several questions should be addressed:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the disease actually associated with a bacterial infection requiring antimicrobial treatment?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is florfenicol within the authorized indication of the specific product for the relevant species and production group?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the suspected or isolated organism likely to be susceptible?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should an injectable, drinking-water, or premix formulation be used?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the animal part of a food-producing group that requires withdrawal-period control?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If treatment is unsuccessful, is antimicrobial resistance the cause, or could other factors be involved?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Vietnam, florfenicol is listed in the regulatory category referred to in Vietnamese as <\/span><b>\u201ckh\u00e1ng sinh r\u1ea5t quan tr\u1ecdng.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In WHO terminology, <\/span><b>highly important<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the appropriate English category wording rather than \u201cvery important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under Vietnam\u2019s antimicrobial-management roadmap for livestock production, veterinary medicines containing antimicrobials in this category were permitted to <\/span><b>remain in circulation and be used for disease-prevention purposes until 31 December 2021<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From <\/span><b>1 January 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, florfenicol was no longer permitted for disease-prevention purposes under this roadmap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use for treatment or <\/span><b>preventive treatment as defined under Vietnamese veterinary regulations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should comply with veterinary prescription requirements, the specific product label, and professional veterinary assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. It is structurally related to chloramphenicol but was developed for veterinary use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florfenicol acts by binding to the <\/span><b>50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, disrupting bacterial protein synthesis. When protein synthesis is inhibited, the growth and multiplication of susceptible bacteria are restricted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florfenicol is generally described as primarily bacteriostatic, although its actual effect may depend on factors including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial strain;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug concentration;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Site of infection;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal species;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product formulation;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical circumstances.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>How Does Florfenicol Differ From Chloramphenicol and Thiamphenicol?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florfenicol differs structurally from chloramphenicol and does not contain the characteristic nitro group found in chloramphenicol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared with thiamphenicol, florfenicol has structural modifications that may reduce the effect of certain resistance mechanisms involving acetylation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that, from a mechanistic perspective, some bacterial strains resistant to chloramphenicol or thiamphenicol through this particular mechanism <\/span><b>may<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remain susceptible to florfenicol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it should not be assumed that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a bacterium is resistant to chloramphenicol, florfenicol will definitely still work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susceptibility should be evaluated at the strain level. In recurrent disease, treatment failure, or herds and flocks with substantial antimicrobial-use histories, culture and <\/span><b>antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be considered when appropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Antibacterial Spectrum of Florfenicol<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florfenicol has activity against many Gram-negative bacteria, certain Gram-positive bacteria, and some Mycoplasma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organisms that may appear on product labels or in professional veterinary references include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasteurella multocida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mannheimia haemolytica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaesserella parasuis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streptococcus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spp.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain Mycoplasma species.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organisms such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E. coli<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salmonella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spp., or other bacteria should only be considered treatment targets when they fall within the authorized product indication or when appropriate professional evidence supports use for the relevant species and disease condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Antibacterial spectrum is not the same as an indication list.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This distinction is important when livestock producers read information about an antimicrobial active ingredient.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Bacteria such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasteurella multocida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaesserella parasuis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may fall within the indications of certain florfenicol products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, PRDC is a multifactorial syndrome. If viruses, inadequate ventilation, stocking density, stress, or co-infections are major contributors, antimicrobial selection alone will not resolve the entire problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>In Poultry<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authorized use of florfenicol in chickens and ducks varies among countries, markets, and individual products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain products in some markets may be authorized for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respiratory bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain secondary bacterial infections;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specific disease conditions stated on the product label.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructions for florfenicol use in chickens or ducks from one country should not be applied directly to Vietnam or another market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>In Cattle<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain florfenicol products are authorized for bovine respiratory disease (<\/span><b>BRD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) associated with susceptible organisms such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mannheimia haemolytica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasteurella multocida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Histophilus somni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Other indications should be confirmed directly from the specific product label.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For cattle producing milk for human consumption, it is especially important to confirm whether the particular product is authorized for that production group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A milk withdrawal period should not be independently inferred when a product is not approved for lactating dairy cattle producing milk for human consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Injectable, Drinking-Water, and Premix Florfenicol Products Are Not Interchangeable<\/b><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19878\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19878\" style=\"width: 1098px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19878\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premixes administered through feed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important point is that <\/span><b>each formulation is designed for a specific method of administration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should not be assumed that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey all contain florfenicol, so an injectable formulation can also be mixed into drinking water if the amount is calculated correctly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not an appropriate approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injectable and oral formulations may differ in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concentration;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excipients;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stability;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The product is authorized for injection;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is authorized for the relevant animal species;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease falls within its indication;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veterinarian determines that this route is appropriate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An injectable product should not be selected simply because the animal appears \u201cmore severely ill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>When May a Drinking-Water Product Be Used?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain products are authorized for administration through drinking water in specific species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When treating a group of animals through drinking water, relevant factors include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actual water consumption;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental temperature;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Condition of the flock or herd;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stability of the product after preparation;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water-delivery system;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Length of time medicated water is provided.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When diseased animals reduce water intake, the amount of medicine actually consumed by each animal may be lower than expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concentration should not be independently increased simply to compensate for reduced water intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Premix Formulations<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premixes should only be used when the product is authorized for administration through feed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feed consumption, mixing uniformity, and reduced appetite during disease may all affect the amount of medicine actually received by the animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. There Is No Single \u201cStandard Florfenicol Dose\u201d for Every Species and Product<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florfenicol doses may be expressed in mg\/kg body weight or by another dosing method depending on the specific product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A table such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pigs = X mg\/kg<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chickens = Y mg\/kg<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cattle = Z mg\/kg<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should not be created and then applied to every florfenicol product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach may be incorrect because products differ in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formulation;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concentration;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Route of administration;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight:
