In these situations, making the uterus contract more strongly does not address the underlying cause and may make the obstetric case more difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin is a hormone used in veterinary medicine to stimulate uterine smooth-muscle contractions and the milk let-down reflex in appropriate situations. It may be useful when a veterinarian determines that uterine contractions are inadequate but the birth canal remains suitable for delivery to continue, or for certain postpartum and lactation-related indications according to the specific product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, the most important question before use is not:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cHow many minutes of prolonged labor should pass before oxytocin is given?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWhy is labor not progressing, and would increasing uterine contractions actually address the underlying cause?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. How Does Oxytocin Affect the Uterus and Mammary Gland?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin is a peptide hormone synthesized in the hypothalamus and stored and released from the posterior pituitary gland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinary oxytocin products produce effects similar to endogenous oxytocin, acting primarily on two systems: <\/span><b>uterine smooth muscle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>mammary gland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Effects on the Uterus<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin binds to receptors on uterine smooth-muscle cells, activating intracellular signaling that increases calcium availability and promotes muscle contraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The degree of response depends on factors including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal species;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physiological stage;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uterine condition;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receptor density;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Timing of administration;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product formulation and route of administration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The uterus is generally more responsive to oxytocin late in gestation and around parturition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><b>the ability of the uterus to contract strongly does not mean that the fetus can pass through the birth canal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the fetus is obstructed, stronger contractions may simply increase pressure on the:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uterus;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fetus;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cervix;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reproductive tract.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why mechanical obstruction should be assessed before oxytocin is considered.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Effects on the Milk Let-Down Reflex<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin also acts on myoepithelial cells surrounding the mammary alveoli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When these cells contract, milk that has already been produced is moved from the alveoli into the ductal system and milk cisterns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the <\/span><b>milk ejection or milk let-down reflex<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important distinction is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Oxytocin helps release milk that has already been produced; it does not directly increase long-term milk synthesis by the mammary gland.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a cow or sow has persistently reduced milk production, other factors should also be assessed, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutrition;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water intake;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Systemic disease;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mastitis;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Condition of the offspring;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milking technique;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Management conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin should not be used repeatedly as a general solution to \u201cincrease milk production.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Use should be based on the specific product, animal species, and obstetric situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>When Uterine Contractions Are Inadequate but There Is No Obstruction<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of the most important situations in which oxytocin may be considered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a veterinarian determines that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labor has reached an appropriate stage;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cervix is adequately dilated;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fetus is capable of passing through the birth canal;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No mechanical obstruction is present;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delayed labor is associated with inadequate uterine contractions;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxytocin may be considered according to the product indication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key principle is that <\/span><b>the cause should be diagnosed before the decision to use the medicine is made<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Supporting Postpartum Uterine Involution<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some oxytocin products are indicated to support postpartum uterine involution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether use is appropriate depends on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Species;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum condition;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product indication;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinary assessment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin should not automatically be administered to every animal after giving birth simply to make the uterus \u201cclear out faster.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Supporting the Milk Let-Down Reflex<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some species and with appropriately indicated products, oxytocin may be used to support milk let-down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if the problem repeatedly occurs, the underlying cause should be investigated rather than relying on oxytocin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Oxytocin and Retained Fetal Membranes in Cattle<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a commonly misunderstood issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Retained fetal membranes (RFM), often referred to as retained placenta, should not automatically be treated with oxytocin in an attempt to promote faster detachment and expulsion.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RFM should be assessed according to factors including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time since parturition;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General condition of the cow;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discharge;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk of metritis;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic status;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other postpartum clinical findings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of retained fetal membranes should not automatically be interpreted as an indication for oxytocin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. How Do Considerations Differ Between Cattle, Sows, Goats, and Sheep?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin should not be used according to the principle:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUse less for a smaller animal and more for a larger animal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responses to hormones are not determined by body weight alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>In Cattle<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin may be considered in selected situations such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain cases of inadequate uterine contractions after obstruction has been ruled out;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support of postpartum uterine involution when appropriate;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support of milk let-down when the product is indicated for this purpose.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should not be regarded as a routine treatment for retained fetal membranes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>In Sows<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During farrowing, the interval between piglets can provide useful monitoring information but is <\/span><b>not sufficient on its own to justify oxytocin administration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If farrowing is prolonged, relevant factors to assess include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether piglets remain in the uterus;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether a piglet is obstructed;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fetal presentation and position;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Condition of the sow;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strength of uterine contractions;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progress of farrowing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin may be considered when uterine contractions are inadequate after mechanical causes have been excluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some products may also be used to support milk let-down when appropriately indicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>In Goats and Sheep<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin should only be used when:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The product is indicated for the species;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The obstetric situation is appropriate;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no mechanical obstruction;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veterinarian has assessed the case.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not extrapolate a cattle or pig dose to goats or sheep simply by adjusting for body weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5.
