Sow feed intake is what drives milk production. If the intake and the nutrients in the feed are not sufficient for milk production the sow will metabolize her own body to make milk. If she loses more than 10% of her body weight she will have a smaller subsequent litter. If the nutrient content and feed intake levels are not sufficient then the piglets will not grow during lactation and overall growth throughout the growing period will be poor.

“Feeding high productive sows and pigs”
Pig producers in Denmark have during the last 10 years increased the number of piglets every year with about 0,5 piglet per sow. This success is an combination of breeding strategy , high educated people to manage the production - and a feed that meet the demands from this high productive sow and it´s piglets.

Mr. Danh Phan & Mr. Pham Van Quy, Xuan Phu Cooperative
For more than 25 years, countries that have a world class, advanced livestock industry - notably the countries of North America and Europe - have already achieved an average yield of breeding sows equal to 25 weaned piglets per sow per year. In addition, today their average yield can rise to more than 30 weaned piglets per sow per year. Even more, there are a number of pig farms reported in the United Kingdom that have achieved sow productivity of up to 40 weaned piglets per sow per year! The reason they have achieved such high results is because they have invested a lot of finance to support their knowledge and have had clear strategies for the livestock sector for a long period of time. Currently, the average yield of Vietnamese sows is approximately 17-18 weaned piglets per sow per year! While at the same time, the average yield of the breeding stock of large companies operating in Vietnam proffers a somewhat higher yield (approximately 21-23 piglets per sow per year), this remains much lower than the above-mentioned countries. This is the main reason why Program 25+ has been initiated, in order to find a new direction to solve this problem.
