According to the National Diary Development Project, Vietnam's dairy cow herd will be increased to
200,000 heads by 2010 in order to meet the domestic milk demand of 40 percent.
Dairy farming is developing quickly since 200 at an average rate of 27.8 percent each year. In 2005, the
country had obtained the target of 100,000 dairy cows, one year ahead of schedule. The herd produced
152,000 litres of fresh milk, accounting for 20 percent of the country's demand.
The Industry Ministry has already approved a development plan up to year 2010 to raise milk production,
with total investment of US$137.19 million. The plan aims to increase per capita milk supply to 10 kilograms
a year by 2010 ad 20 kilograms by 2020.
Leading milk producer companies such as Vinamilk, Campina and Dutch Lady recently announced in
June 2007 that they are investing million of US dollars on dairy farming projects to contribute to dairy market
development in Vietnam as well as bring more products to Vietnamese customers.
Apart milk the dairy, about 80% of the meat production is pork while the share of poultry meat is about
2.8% and other kinds of meat including beef, buffalo, and goat meat occupy 7.2%. 90% of these outputs are
consumed by the domestic market.
MARD figures show that annual per capita meat consumption in Vietnam is increasing up to about 35 kg
per year as the income levels of Vietnamese people are improving. MARD also reported that Vietnam's
livestock production value as a proportion of the total value of Vietnam Agriculture production increased from
17% in 2001 to 22.4% in 2004 and hopes the country can raise this livestock proportion livestock to 30%
by 2010.
